# GLP-1 Medications List 2026: Every Approved Shot and Pill, Plus What's Coming

GLP-1 medications are prescription drugs that act like GLP-1, a gut hormone involved in blood sugar control and appetite. As of September 2026, the US market has six GLP-1-based molecules, plus lixisenatide, which is available in an insulin combination. They come as weekly injections, daily injections and daily pills. This list covers every FDA-approved option, what each is approved for, which generics exist and which new drugs are still in trials.

## Which GLP-1 medications are FDA-approved in 2026?

As of September 2026, the FDA-approved GLP-1-based medicines are semaglutide, tirzepatide, liraglutide, dulaglutide, exenatide and orforglipron, plus lixisenatide inside an insulin combination. They are sold as Ozempic, Rybelsus, Ozempic tablets, Wegovy, the Wegovy pill, Mounjaro, Zepbound, Victoza, Saxenda, Trulicity, Foundayo, two insulin combinations and several generics.

"Weight" means chronic weight management in people with obesity, or overweight plus at least one weight-related condition, alongside diet and exercise. The brand-name exenatide products, Byetta and Bydureon BCise, are listed as discontinued in Drugs@FDA; Soliqua and Xultophy are still listed as prescription products. Brand names are trademarks of their makers.

## What makes a medicine "GLP-1-based"?

A GLP-1-based medicine switches on the GLP-1 receptor, the same target as the body's own hormone. Some drugs act only there. Others also act on related hormone receptors: tirzepatide adds GIP, and experimental drugs add glucagon or amylin. The Wegovy label describes GLP-1 as a natural regulator of appetite and calorie intake.

The medicines are engineered to last far longer than the natural hormone. Semaglutide's half-life is about one week and tirzepatide's about five days, which is what makes once-weekly dosing possible. ### Peptide or small molecule?

Most GLP-1 drugs are peptides: chains of amino acids built like the natural hormone. Semaglutide, for example, has a molecular weight of about 4,114 g/mol. Peptides are poorly absorbed from the gut. The Wegovy label puts semaglutide's bioavailability at 89% by injection but only about 1% to 2% as a tablet, which is why the pills contain an absorption enhancer (SNAC) and come with strict fasting rules.

Orforglipron (Foundayo) is different. It is a small molecule, with a molecular weight of about 902 g/mol for the form in the tablet, and its label reports 77% bioavailability. The label says to take it once daily with or without food.

## Which GLP-1 medications come as pills?

Three GLP-1 medicines come as pills in the US: semaglutide tablets for type 2 diabetes (Rybelsus and the newer Ozempic tablets), the Wegovy pill for weight management, and Foundayo (orforglipron), also for weight management. The semaglutide pills have strict fasting rules; Foundayo does not.

The US label says Rybelsus and Ozempic tablets are not interchangeable milligram for milligram. Pills and injections are not dose-equivalent either, and any switch between forms follows specific label instructions, so plan it with your prescriber or pharmacist.

## Weekly shot or daily dose: how do the schedules differ?

Semaglutide injections (Ozempic, Wegovy), tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) and dulaglutide (Trulicity) are given once a week. Liraglutide, the insulin combinations and all the pills are taken once a day. Generic exenatide is injected twice a day, within 60 minutes before the morning and evening meals.

The schedule affects more than convenience. Orforglipron's half-life is about 29 to 49 hours, far shorter than semaglutide's, and each product has its own missed-dose rule. The Zepbound label allows a missed dose within 4 days, while the Wegovy pill label says to skip a missed tablet and take the next one the following day. ## What else are GLP-1 medications approved for?

Beyond blood sugar and weight, several GLP-1 medicines now have extra US indications. These include lowering the risk of heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular death, slowing kidney disease in type 2 diabetes, treating obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity, and treating MASH, a fatty liver disease with scarring. Some are also approved for children or teens.

The MASH approval is an accelerated approval, which means continued approval may depend on a confirmatory trial. In March 2026 the FDA also approved a higher 7.2 mg weekly dose of Wegovy, sold as Wegovy HD.

## Are there generic GLP-1 medications?

Yes, but only for older molecules. Generic liraglutide, the active ingredient in Victoza and Saxenda, has been FDA-approved since December 2024, and Drugs@FDA lists approvals for at least nine companies. Amneal's generic exenatide was approved in November 2024. No generic semaglutide, tirzepatide or dulaglutide has full FDA approval; the one semaglutide generic listed has only tentative approval, which does not allow it to be sold.

Outside the US, semaglutide lost exclusivity in 2026 in several large markets, including India (on March 20, 2026), China, Brazil, Turkey and Canada, according to IQVIA. Health Canada's Drug Product Database lists generic semaglutide injections from Dr. Reddy's and Apotex as marketed since May 2026, with further approvals for Aspen and Sandoz through September 2026. These products are not approved in the US.

Compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide is not a generic. The FDA notes that compounded drugs are not FDA approved and are not reviewed for safety, effectiveness or quality before they are marketed. ## What new GLP-1 drugs are coming?

The drugs closest to US approval are CagriSema, a weekly combination of semaglutide and the amylin analog cagrilintide with an FDA decision expected in late 2026, and retatrutide, which Lilly plans to submit in early 2027. Survodutide, MariTide and amycretin are in phase 3 trials, and Novo Nordisk is seeking approval for a 25 mg semaglutide diabetes pill.

In MariTide's phase 2 trial, published in NEJM in 2025, people with obesity lost 12.3% to 16.2% of body weight at 52 weeks, versus 2.5% with placebo. Survodutide's SYNCHRONIZE-1 figure assumes everyone stayed on treatment, and the full results were published in NEJM. The retatrutide trials are company-reported toplines. ### Which GLP-1 drugs are approved outside the US but not here?

Mazdutide, a glucagon and GLP-1 dual agonist from Innovent, is approved in China for chronic weight management and, since September 2025, for type 2 diabetes. It is not approved in the US.

None of the pipeline drugs can be legally sold in the US as medicines. The FDA has warned companies that illegally sold products containing retatrutide, survodutide or mazdutide labeled "for research purposes" or "not for human consumption," and it urges consumers not to buy them because their quality is unknown.

## Bottom line

- **Six molecules, many brands.** Semaglutide and tirzepatide dominate, but liraglutide, dulaglutide, exenatide and orforglipron remain options, including generics for liraglutide and exenatide.
- **Pills are now a real choice** for both type 2 diabetes and weight management, with very different food rules between the semaglutide pills and Foundayo.
- **The pipeline is busy but not yet available.** CagriSema and a higher-dose semaglutide pill await FDA decisions in late 2026; retatrutide, survodutide, MariTide and amycretin are still in trials.

### What is the newest GLP-1 medication?

The newest FDA-approved GLP-1 molecule is orforglipron, sold as Foundayo, a once-daily pill for weight management approved on April 1, 2026. Existing drugs also gained approvals in 2026, including a 7.2 mg dose of Wegovy in March and a heart-risk indication for Mounjaro in August.

### Is there a GLP-1 pill for weight loss?

Yes. Two pills are FDA-approved for chronic weight management: the Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide, approved December 2025) and Foundayo (orforglipron, approved April 2026). Rybelsus and Ozempic tablets are semaglutide pills approved for type 2 diabetes, not for weight loss.

### Are Ozempic and Wegovy the same drug?

Both contain semaglutide made by Novo Nordisk, but they are separate products with different approved uses and doses. ### Is compounded semaglutide a generic?

No. A generic is FDA-approved as a copy of a brand-name drug, while compounded drugs are not FDA approved. As of September 2026, no generic semaglutide has full FDA approval in the US.

### Can I get generic Victoza or Saxenda?
